Street to Street: September 2008

Once you plant a seed, forget about it.

I just went 'exploring' with my son. We live about eight miles south of Downtown Dallas in 'the hood' but we are very close to 'the wood'. Our area is affectionately known as Hutchins Texas; a small freedman's town for black slaves at the turn of the century that unfortunately hasn't really progressed like many of the other Dallas suburbs. Maybe it's the jail that our leaders invested in 35 years ago (there was big money in jails...who would've known it was only at the expense of our emerging generation at the time) or maybe it's the city dump that's next to the jail (yea, could you imagine, a jail and a dump)...whatever the reason we have a lot of underdeveloped land close to my crib. I mean, you can chill on my block and hear cars driving by booming the latest underground southern hip hop; the next minute hear a neighbor pumping some old school Tejano joint...then go for about two miles and you're seeing cows and horses!

So I took my son out to a wildlife preserve that we have close to the Trinity River about 4 miles from the crib and we went 'exploring'. Now I'm loving this experience: watching a 10 year old play with nature; it definitely beats him whipping me up on some Playstation. So Jordan finds some seeds of some strange plant, (as long as it ain't long pointy and got three leaves I'm O.K. with it) bring it home and wants to plant it in our front yard. So we get home, and Jordan goes and finds the shovel, digs a hole and drops the seeds. In my fatherly way I seize the opportunity to drop some wizdom on the kid and I said something that made me think. "O.K. Jordan, now the secret to seeing something grow is to plant the seed and forget about it."

Wow. And I realized that God was speaking to me. How many times do we miss our blessing because we went back to the place of sowing only to sabotage the process by digging up the seed before it's time? God's blessings are yielded as fruit that comes forth (undeniably) in its season. Don't convince yourself that the seed has miraculously transformed into yielded fruit overnight! Just forget about it! Ecclesiastes says to 'Cast your bread upon the waters' and it will come back after many days (and in many ways). Look, bottom line is that God is going to bless you just like he said so don't sweat...Just get in position, wait on the Lord and 'forget about it'. God certainly hasn't forgotten about you and the blessing will come right on time. Let it be a pleasant but anticipated surprise. And after he's blessed you: Don't you ever forget about it!

FREDDIE FREEBIE: Here’s a cool innovative resource on meditation that will help you in your discipline to ‘forget about it’. Meditation is the practice of disciplining your mind. Isaiah 26:3 says that God will keep us in perfect peace when I mind is stayed on him. I believe this passage points us to meditation. I use this resource to condition my mind to think the right thoughts and clean out the wrong thoughts.
