Training Strategies: New Voices Concert Impacts Far Rockaway
YPN ministry partner Neighborhood MultiPurpose Center (NMPC) hosted a great mid-summer concert event July 9 at the Beech Channel High School in Far Rockaway, New York.
NMPC and YPN created the student led "New Voices" organization this last school year to provide students at the Beech Channel and Far Rockaway high schools opportunities for service, quality fellowship and interaction. New Voices came into being as a result to the shooting death of one of the students at Far Rockaway High School in January 2004. YPN joined with NMPC to provide counseling and conflict resolution to a number of the gangs operating in the Far Rockaway area of the Queens borough of New York City.
The concert was a way to bring the students together for a joint event during the summer months and to give them an outlet for a summer night of music and inspiration.
The concert featured the hip-hop ministry of Tommy "Urban D" Kyllonen, Spec and break dancers "b.boy kru".
Les Mullings, Executive Director of NMPC and New Voices, indicated that the concert made it possible for thousands of high school students to become aware of New Voices and YouthPartnersNET!
